Walk me through the rules of Gun Rush here. This isn't just run around and kill everybody.

TL;DRIn Gun Rush, each kill switches your weapon through 16 levels, easier guns alternating with harder ones to help catch-up, though skilled sniper users undermine that; the mode also proved out spawning and loadout refactors.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

So Gun Rush, as you can see, as Sam gets a kill, his weapon changes. His gun will change. You've got 16 levels that you work through. And this mode, other than being a favorite amongst us in the team from other games, it's where we used to prove out our refactor of our spawning and loadout modules. So the switching out of weapons, the changing of your armor, you'll notice that everyone in the match is wearing a different color armor. Previously that wasn't possible. It proved out a lot of technologies and got one of our favorite modes in the game as our first experimental mode.

SBo: So the Gun Rush progression is essentially we didn't want to start people off on the easiest guns and just go all the way to the hardest from there onwards. We didn't want to go from the easiest to the hardest, and that was it. We wanted to basically start you off with easier guns, SMGs, LMGs, and then every one or two easy guns, we would then switch it back to a harder one to allow people to catch up, essentially. Obviously, it doesn't work because some people are just really good at snipers, which makes it not a great stopgap. But that's the overall intention of it.

For folks who haven't watched the several shows we've done on this so far, what are experimental modes?

TL;DRExperimental modes are limited-time modes rotating through patch cycles, used to prove out features, gather feedback or try wacky ideas that wouldn't work in the persistent universe.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

Experimental modes are limited time modes that rotate through a patch cycle. So out here on PTU right now, we have almost all experimental modes available, but in live, it'll be one at a time. But those modes are used to prove out features, gather feedback, or just have fun with something. Like if we have a wacky idea, which obviously won't work in the PU, we can't just switch your weapon out in the PU, right? But we can do that in Arena Commander. We can have a bit of fun with it.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

But no, this patch was primarily meant to be a bunch of refactors. There wasn't meant to be so much content in it. We got some more time, we managed to get a bunch more stuff in there. Gun Rush is the one that we were most passionate about to get in because we thought it would be pretty fun and successful, and PTU has kind of proven that. I don't think there's been a time I've went in PTU and there hasn't been a lobby of Gun Rush going on.

So this is the new scoring screen. Anything to talk about here?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

The scoreboard's been in for a while, but we fixed a lot. There was a lot of problems, and we've added a bunch of quality of life improvements and whatnot, so now you can see the game mode that you're in, see your squad mates. If we were with squad mates, they'd highlight a different color. Most notably is our new UI at the top of the screen. We just call it the top HUD, but I guess you could call it objective UI, where we've got your score, your opponent's score.

Is everybody on your team in hot pink right now?

Cloud Imperium

SBo: It randomizes the armor. So you're not any team in this mode. It's a free-for-all.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

Not just the armor, but the weapon skins as well. So as it changes weapons, you get various different skins. I don't know if there's any rarity to the skins, but I always like getting the Executive Edition, you know, the gold.

SBo: No, I don't think so. I think it's just randomized completely.

Could the toy pistol be utilized in an experimental mode?asked by Herobrine024

TL;DRYes, off-the-wall items like the foam dart weapon could suit experimental modes, since Arena Commander is a simulation where fun comes first, for example an EVA race with push-back darts.

Jared HuckabyHost, Community

But what about the weird kind of off-the-wall stuff? Are those the kind of things that are rife for experimental modes?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

Absolutely. With Arena Commander, we can take more... I guess liberties is the word with the engine. It's a simulation, right? A simulation within the simulation. We can put stuff in there that's just for fun, right? We can focus on the fun. So if that silliness is fun, why not? If it's not fun, maybe not.

Jared HuckabyHost, Community

So imagine you had to spec out a game mode with the foam dart weapons now. What are your first instincts? Should we keep zero damage? Where does the gameplay come from with zero damage?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

Or I'm thinking even more out of the box, like maybe you've got an EVA race where you've got the dart gun and you shoot it and it has increased push. So it pushes your opponents off to the side. Maybe you're trying to get through some freight boxes or whatever it may be, and you push them and they go out of bounds or something like that.

Why do you fly with dual sticks as opposed to HOTAS?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

I am personally really into the immersion of games. I don't know if I'm better with the dual sticks, but it feels better. And it looks cool as well. The cool factor is something you must consider.

Jared HuckabyHost, Community

Are you suggesting that you play with dual sticks because it feels cool?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

It definitely does feel cool and it might play a factor.

SBo: That is a valid reason. I mean, I think you can have a higher skill ceiling when you get good at dual sticks as well.

How much do you like [the Tobii eye tracker]? Every time I see you playing, you're always playing with Tobii.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

I was on the fence about it to begin with because that's a lot of movement. But when you're the person playing or even just watching, it's really immersive. It's very intuitive how it works. And personally, I need it for racing, because generally you're not looking where you're going in racing. You're looking to the side, like this, moving.

Jared HuckabyHost, Community

So because there's the three of us in close proximity, if I get too close, will the Tobii track me instead of you?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

That's because you're blocking my eyes. As long as you don't block my eyes, I think it's fine. That's a feature I really like, the eye tracking. So right now I'm not moving my head. This is all my eyes doing it. So I'll look to the left, look to the right. That's just my eyes that are moving. I'm a big fan of that.

For those people who maybe haven't followed the project forever, why is it called Tonk Royale?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

It's actually called Tank Royale in the game. We didn't want it to be in lore.

Jared HuckabyHost, Community

You chickened out?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

We didn't. I want to be clear on that. It was a decision. No, I know the origin, but only after we did the ISC on it, because people sent it.

SBo: Yeah, we didn't know the reason for that naming convention until after that.

If we have ship or vehicle skins, can we apply them?asked by Storm Chilpock

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

Yes, for almost every mode. I think you can for Tank Royale if you own the tank. So we've got this concept of communal vehicles now. And communal vehicles are free vehicles for the game mode, which you can't use anywhere else. You get given them without any cost, no REC, no UEC money or anything like that. And they're non-customizable. But you can always rent the item using the Arena Commander currency, REC, or purchase it from the pledge store, and you'll get your customization.

Why are the tanks floating around instead of staying solidly on the ground?

TL;DRThe floating tanks are partly intended because of the low-gravity map, but a related wheelie bug was fixed and the fix isn't in the PTU yet; they're floatier than meant.

Cloud Imperium

SBo: That is an issue that has been fixed but isn't in the PTU yet.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

Unfortunately, we rolled the lightest gravity map. So on this, you need to be a little bit more mindful of your acceleration and whatnot. But also, there is a bug right now in that you can pull a wheelie with a tank.

SBo: Yeah, currently you can do a lot of styling.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

It was fixed last night, but we are on that mode where Sam is now pulling wheelies.

Jared HuckabyHost, Community

That's not to say that there can't be a mode where you're on an incredibly low G. But that's not what that's supposed to be.

SBo: It's a lot more floaty than it is meant to be at the moment.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

Don't get us wrong, it is meant to be a little bit floaty. Like being Yela, that's 0.2 gravity, which is really low, so you do have to manage your speeds going over these hills.

Are you able to swap between seats with the radial wheel?

Cloud Imperium

SBo: Not at the moment.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

You can enter the remote turret from the driver's seat, but the multi-crew aspect...

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

Yeah, but that's what that is. That's switching the seats of the vehicle. There's two different seats for the driver.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

Not for 3.20. In the future, we might do. Because, obviously, the tank has three seats, actually. It's got your remote machine gun and... well, the turret.

SBo: We did look into making it so that you could have multiple people in the tank. The thing that came up was basically that the second person only got to use the piddly laser gun, so it wasn't really worth them being in it.

What is the giant floating structure [in the middle of the tank map]?

Cloud Imperium

SBo: In terms of why it's there, it's purely just so that people can easily see where the middle of the map is. Some of these maps are sizable.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

We have plans for it.

If we reduce the rocks, the map would be ten times more fun.asked by Blue's Manx

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

It would, and we had long debates about it. This is Daymar. This is actually a location on Daymar. Other than putting the monolith in, we haven't changed things about it. The rocks are there, and it might seem like obvious feedback, but getting some tanks down here, you see how hard it can be to fight on some terrain, and this is not the worst of it. There's far worse biomes, I suppose. So it goes into those updates thanks to the game mode.

Content creators like Avenger 1 seem to have very strong insights into PvP interactions. To what extent does the community assist in the balancing?asked by Netis

TL;DRTwo worldwide teams, Player Experience and community, gather, verify and route player feedback to the relevant designers, and Duncan says vehicle balance discussions weigh it carefully, though no percentage of influence is given.

Jared HuckabyHost, Community

I'm going to go ahead and jump on this one here and say that we have an entire team dedicated to processing, but two, really, teams dedicated to processing and ingesting this feedback. We have the Player Experience team and, of course, our community team. And a big chunk of what they do is to correlate that kind of data, and to process it, and to verify it, because it's not always super accurate. To verify its accuracy, and then to get that into the proper hands: people like Duncan, people like Sam, if it's Arena Commander related, PU designers and stuff like that, and even Squadron designers, if it's something that might affect or benefit that. So to the amount, it's not like I can put a number or a percentage on it, but I can tell you there are literally two teams, two complete teams that both have worldwide presences, dedicated to gathering and collecting and processing that information.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

I think I can probably speak for everyone. Those teams are incredible. I'm in the vehicle balance syncs and discussions being had, all the considerations being had before any change makes it. It's awesome to see.

Jared HuckabyHost, Community

And we have a number of internal resources. People that work here are very involved in this stuff, like Yogi Klatt and Salty Mike, folks who have worked here for years and been on the payroll.

Can parties get into these matches together?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

They absolutely can. So alongside the front end is a reworked lobby system which lets you play with all your friends. Before, we were limited to, what was it, four?

SBo: Yeah, I think it was four. But now it's based on the game mode. So basically in any team modes, you can fill up an entire team with your squad in your lobby, essentially. And then for free-for-all, you can take up the entire space of the game. So in the 16-player mode, you can pair up with 16 people and it'll just shove you all into that one game.

What happens if you survive 25 minutes [in Endless Vandal Swarm]?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander Feature Team

You will acquire a Spectrum badge. A pop-up will come up on your screen. I don't recall if it comes up as soon as you reach 25 minutes or you finish the game after reaching 25 minutes. But that's our goal: you're above average, you get some kind of reward. And that's us testing the ground with rewards in Arena Commander.

Any updates on private lobbies?asked by KoreanBeagle1

TL;DRPrivate lobbies were removed after a refactor of the friends and party systems made them incompatible, and they are now back online, with plans to expand them as "custom matches".

Sean TracySenior Director of Tools and Technology Content

Oh, yeah. Well, and I mean, private lobbies is something that really hurt my heart from the standpoint of I was running the team when we had to remove them. And it wasn't something that we actually removed. It was we had changed over some details that Duncan will probably get into, some details with the lobby system so that we couldn't continue to support the private matches. Now, it was always the thing was next quarter, we'll bring it back. Next quarter, we'll bring it back. Next quarter, we'll bring it back. And it was always something got, the resource got taken, something got missed or whatever. So finally, with a little bit of collaboration with our new friends at Turbulent, we've been able to bring back online private lobbies. So Duncan, do you want to talk any more about that? Maybe some details over why it went away?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander feature team

Yeah, so it went away essentially because we did that big refactor where we got the friends and party systems to the new system that we've got that you're using in the PU now. And that just simply wasn't compatible with what we had in Arena Commander. So the option at the time was we delay this or we shut down private lobbies for now and we revisit it for the next thing. And as Sean says, priorities got shifted, people get moved on to different things and it just kept getting pushed out. Now, thankfully, we're working on it. And we didn't want to just bring them back. We want to do better with them. We want to give more. So private lobbies aren't called private lobbies anymore. They're called custom matches. And custom matches leans into you'll be able to customize more things about it. And we've got so much more planned for it. For now, we're getting what was old back with private lobbies. But we've got so many ideas, so much requests from the community for what we can add there as well.

Are these custom matches in Alpha 3.20?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander feature team

Yes.

Sean TracySenior Director of Tools and Technology Content

The reason we paused is it's coming in literally as we speak. That's why both of us went, "well."

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander feature team

Actively being worked on.

Sean TracySenior Director of Tools and Technology Content

Check's in the mail, but it's not quite that bad.

Jared HuckabyHost, Community

So the goal is for the custom matches to be a part of Alpha 3.20.

Sean TracySenior Director of Tools and Technology Content

Yeah. We were pushing really, really hard for that. The next update for Arena Commander had to have that back in. We know how much the community wants it. We know how much the devs even want it, for a bunch of different reasons anyways, but being able to set up private matches for the community is imperative. So we want to support it.

Will organizations be able to arrange for two opposing teams of predetermined members to play against one another without random players?asked by Shafto

TL;DRThe team wants to support arranging pre-set teams, with a party leader and moderators moving players between teams, and hopes to add custom settings, since orgs relied on this.

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander feature team

Yeah, so this leans into the whole "we want to do better with the private matches." So the almost obvious thing is letting you arrange your teams beforehand. So we've got the idea of you've got a party leader, you've got moderators that can help switch people between teams and whatever. And then you've obviously got the members that join. And then for right now, we've got that team organization. And we're hoping to get some custom settings in and expand upon that. But yeah, bringing back org content to private matches is such a big thing for us because we knew how much orgs used it. We saw the weekly posts on Spectrum like, hey, we're running an org event. Who wants to join? And as soon as the private lobbies went down, that went away. And I'd get pinged constantly about, hey, when are we getting them back for that specific use? And we really want to start accommodating that again.

Sean TracySenior Director of Tools and Technology Content

Yeah, because basically the competitive scene basically shut down without private matches, without being able to customize the match parameters. And it's something that we always want them to be able to have within AC, because ultimately the PU is a multiplayer experience. AC is played best in multiplayer with friends, and we want that to be as easy as possible. And honestly, being able to set up your own little scenarios, I think that's really cool.

Will there be a rank system so I don't have to play against better players?asked by Hellrein

TL;DRA ranking exists behind the scenes, but proper matchmaking will come later and needs more online help from Turbulent; the broken leaderboards are to be reworked, with Squadron Battle and Duel pushed as competitive modes.

Sean TracySenior Director of Tools and Technology Content

So there's actually a lot to this question. Now, right now, behind the scenes, we do have, there is a ranking. And behind the scenes, it works here and there, but it's really not as simple as just a single value. We've come a long way in matchmakers in the game industry overall, where it's got to be region-dependent, it's got to be skill-dependent, it's got to be time-dependent. There's so many different angles of matchmaking. Sort of with that, Duncan, do you want to talk a little bit about what we're going to do for these guys?

Duncan BuntingLead Gameplay Programmer, Arena Commander feature team

Yeah, so as you guys know, we have the leaderboards that are currently online and they haven't really been representative of, well, leaderboards for a while now. The algorithm behind them broke. People have found many exploits behind them. So we want to completely rework those at the same time as doing this proper matchmaking. And that matchmaking is the thing that will have to come later because it needs more help from Turbulent on the online side. But the competitive community in Arena Commander and Star Marine is so passionate, I'll say, about leaderboards and that matchmaking behind it. And we really want to hone in on that and especially push Squadron Battle and Duel to be our primary competitive modes because we think those better reflect those as well.
