The developers discuss why MISC builds the mining ship, plus Carrack internals, Ursa and Lynx rover progress, the Dragonfly's quantum role, and the Polaris name. They also cover 2.3.1 versus 2.4, the netcode rewrite, Concierge flair, merchandise, the Gamescom plans and the LA office.

No, I like... you think of a Toyota car, and there are all these cheap Toyota hatchbacks and sedans and things, and then they also make these big trucks. Do you think of a Toyota? Do you think of a Mitsubishi? I think I'm thinking of Isuzu. Anyway, I like the idea that they make these consumer-grade ships, and then they also make these industrial ships.
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
Ah, the Carrack. We had the kickoff meeting for the Carrack's internals this week, just making sure everything works in the game, and then Gurmukh is going to be revisiting that in the not-too-distant future, once the Caterpillar work is wound down.
Sorry if that disappoints you. Down the line, we'd like to make it wearable once the item port system is... Yeah, I was seeing some feedback about the flair yesterday. It's our first foray into that for Concierge, so.
I asked for it. After that, it's out of my hands. I did propose an event where we do that, but it has not been vetted or approved or anything yet. It's out there.
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
Yes, we did a kickoff for the Ursa Rover this week, and we'll be talking about it more in the next couple days. Lynx, I think, already has concept art.
Yes. In fact, I've been told they have a build they'd like to try to push today. Not a promise, but they're going to give it a shot. That's 2.3.1, not 2.4. 2.4 is a ways off. 2.4 is not ready. We're not close to 2.4.
No, anything you send us, I'll be happy to pass it on to the appropriate folks. I imagine if I looked at a procedural tree, I would just have no idea what that is. But we do know who to send it to. Germans. Usually Germans.
That is a procedural build from about a month and a half ago that was in our February show and tell. And they were kind enough to let us share some of the February stuff with the community. It's by no means final. It's not even close to final. It's continuing development, which is why we label it such. We're just showing you things as they progress so that you can actually see how things get built out and how things progress through development. It's one of those cool things we can do because Star Citizen works the way it's working, where we get to follow things in development. So still very early on in the process, but I hope we can show you more and more as it progresses so you can see what an amazing system it's shaping up to be.
No, this was something that, I think last year or the year before, we asked what kind of perks do you concierge guys want? And I believe flair was one of the overwhelming responses that we got, and then there was a thread looking for ideas and then we pulled from that thread.

We will do other things as we go forward, but it's not going to be a schedule like subscribers. In the case of the subscriber flair, the subscriber money pays to make the flair, so it's a self-enclosed system.
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
No, I don't believe so. No, because I imagine if it were, we'd have our development prototype. In fact, no, I think it's the generation before ours as far as their production design development process goes.
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
No, I mean, it depends what you mean by commercial launch. You can buy the game right now. Is it commercial launch? No. It's the hope, but... Yeah, I don't know. I think we're not there yet. Especially for the newer ones. I mean, pretty much everything before 2015, through 2015 probably. In fact, I think it wasn't until the Endeavor that we looked at schedules where, oh, this might come out after the beta or whatever.
Possibly. Right now we're working on two different sets of manufacturer patches, which we'll probably sell before we would sell that set again, but we can certainly look into bringing those back as well.
No, we're doing our event differently this year. We're not having a ticketed event that you go to. We're going to have several more social events, and then we're going to have a booth on the show floor also. It's a whole new paradigm for us. So short version, no single giant Star Citizen event at Gamescom this year. But there'll be like four or five other events that are the same size. That won't cost you anything. So no worries about getting tickets. Just try and find a hotel room.
TL;DRNo; rewriting code is described as a normal part of development in any game, and the only difference is that Star Citizen's process is visible to players.
No. One thing that we see all the time is people are like, oh, you're rewriting something, you're redoing something, you're rebuilding a 3D model. That is part of the process of any game ever. When I get in the car in GTA, that car has been redesigned 30 times. It's just how the process works. The only difference in Star Citizen is that you guys are seeing it. So when someone says, oh, they're rewriting that code, that simply means, oh, they're doing their job as intended. It's the difference between development and construction. Construction, everything is planned out from the beginning, and then you're just building what's on the paper. Instead of development, where you are trying things, trying different things, trying yet different things to get to the end result that you're looking for, to discover the end result that you're looking for. So fundamental difference between development and construction.
They're every week in ATV. We started it about three weeks ago. The sneak peek has been replaced by a more robust segment, a thing that lets us show more than just art.
TL;DRThe January livestream did not happen because there wasn't enough to show, and they switched to prepared interview videos, which already covered what the livestream would have shown.
It didn't happen. Spoiler alert. We just didn't have enough to do the livestream.
BL
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
Yeah, late last year, we had this idea that we'd do a live stream every month or two to do a Squadron 42 character. And when we actually got to the live stream, it just made more sense to put out a prepared video with the interview and then the associated video. So we switched to doing that.
It's a lot of work to keep a live stream as compelling as this one. We do between one and three live streams a week. People think anybody can do this, and I think we prove that wrong every week.
BL
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
But the January live stream was going to be to show off Agent Scully, whose name I can't remember, Gillian Anderson, and some of the John Rhys-Davies work. So you've seen everything you would have seen at that live stream. You just miss us doing this for the rest of the time.
TL;DRA video is coming soon since the office is almost done, with only the front lobby left, and they plan a tour once it's ready, ideally given by Chris.
Soon. It's almost done. We're still working on that lobby.
BL
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
Yeah, the LA office has gone from very plain, bare everything, to looking fantastic. We've got these cool wall prints up everywhere. We've got a kitchen area with a coffee bar. All of our offices are Star Citizen themed, so we have fake titles that are in the UEE future. But the very last thing we have been working on is the front lobby. You don't necessarily need a front lobby to continue development. So they're building the desk that goes in there and the doors that open up into the rest of the studio. And soon our studio will have a front door. It's going to be fantastic.
Yes, soon we'll have a front door. Star Citizen front door coming soon. And once it's up to snuff, we'll do a tour. I think we'll have Chris give it, because this is his baby.
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
No, I came up with Polaris during the meeting about the untitled corvette. We were looking for something that said Navy, military, and I associate Polaris with the missiles. My granddad worked on the design of the Polaris ICBMs. So our RSI ship titles are usually something spacey, Aurora, Constellation and so on. So we wanted something that could fit that, but also say military, and Polaris stuck there. I still don't know if that's going to be the permanent name, although it seems to have stuck everywhere. It hasn't gotten that 100% Chris Roberts thumbs up, though.
TL;DRThey don't know yet whether the Idris will be explorable before launch; it's an ongoing debate, the decision isn't needed until it's ready, and the current build is still unfinished.
No, but there's more to it than just that, though. There's lots of good information about things that seem to involve your interests.
BL
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
Yeah, it's an ongoing debate about the Idris, just because it's so essential to a bunch of Squadron 42 scenes. We don't necessarily want to give away the sets. It would be like putting out the sets to a movie before it comes out. But there's also a compelling reason to get it out there and people seeing how cool it is. So ongoing discussion. And either way, it's not a decision that has to be made until it's ready to go.
So it's not there yet. It's not like we have a switch right now that's Idris going off. It's not like we could have it out there to you guys and we're just dragging our feet. It's not ready to go yet.
BL
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
Yeah, QA is testing an Idris build right now where you can do all the inner stuff, that's true, but it's not done done. You'll get in there and you'll go down two decks and there'll be a completely blank room or something. So it still has some work going on.
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
I don't think so. I know Chris asked them to make the thrusters glow, the intakes glow, like in Gurmukh's concept art. But that's one of those things that, going back and changing the thrusters in the Vanguard is very, very late in the... Yeah, it's not a high priority thing to make the thrusters glow.
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
Yes, Tyler did a good job on his. I'm not going to shame anyone in particular, but everyone was late except Tyler. No, monthly reports, we have them all in now. They have been sent to Legal, aka Toast, for his review, which is hopefully happening right now. Once it comes back from him... in fact, it's mid-styling right now, so as soon as this show is done, Jared and Tyler and I are going to go finish up the actual post. We send it to Chris, who's in Austin right now, for his review. He has to sign off, Toast has to sign off, then we publish it. So it might be a late one depending on their workloads and what might need to be changed.
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
The Dragonfly has quantum, but it can't land on a planet by itself, so it's like a reverse snub fighter. So you can take a Merlin from a planet up into a ship in orbit, but it can't quantum somewhere. It needs to be carried to another nav point. Whereas the Dragonfly, it can fly from point to point in space very easily, but it can't go back to your hangar. You need something to take it there. So it's one of those very easy checks and balances style things. So we envision, oh, you load up your Caterpillar with a whole bunch of cheap Dragonflies and you go raid some big ship, and then you carry them home in that. Carry home the survivors, because Dragonflies are going to be cheap and plentiful.
OK, so what you're not going to have is Chris Roberts standing in front of a crowd of people and giving a presentation that they've been working on for the previous month to get right. That's what we're skipping this time. But we will have Chris Roberts getting in front of crowds and sharing all the stuff we've been doing, whatever it is to that point. And we'll have all sorts of Squadron stuff. We'll have all of us there. And we'll have fans streaming. There's all sorts of things happening.
Ben LesnickDirector of Community Engagement, Online Strategy and Spaceships
Yeah, down the line we can do that, but I kind of like having them in the game to find and use. It speaks to the finished game much more than, oh, here's a cash shop, buy everything. I kind of like the fact that we have not been putting every single FPS weapon in the store. Eventually, there will be in-game stores where you can buy weapons and stuff.
Nope, that was the entire thing. We cut internally. We have an internal ATV editing studio where we share just clips from each team showing off what they're working on, and that's where we pulled those from. So it had been edited before it got to us into a short thing showing, hey, some of the cool work we're doing. That was the entire Subsumption bit.
Exactly. We keep it in general chat, so it's fair game for everybody. If I'm not asking you a question, it's most likely because I just know we don't have an answer for it.
I love the Endeavor. I just think it's cool and I like those pods. I also love the M50. I just think it's a really cool design. It's been my favorite for a while.
