Has there been any internal testing of Linux using Vulkan?
Ali Brown · Director of Graphics Engineering

Well, I'll preface it with: I generally don't have much involvement with Linux. That would be more the engine team and stuff. But I do know aspects. So in the graphics team internally, I don't run Linux, and I think most of our guys don't run Linux for the game. Gen12 is our focus, and Windows support. However, I know some of our employees have played the game and frequently play it via, I'm told, Lutris and Proton, the libraries they use on Linux, and that they get reasonable performance already. Now, switching to Vulkan will make that existing method of running on Linux much faster and should theoretically give you comparable or even better performance on Linux. I'm not sure if that's the only way we'll support Linux. I'm not sure if there's going to be a native client. That's a question for somebody else, for the engine team or CR. But I'm told there is a way, and that way is going to get faster on Linux. But we haven't tested it ourselves yet. The Vulkan support isn't at a point where you could directly compare A to B. Like I said, we're missing the transparent geometry at the moment, so it would be a bit unfair to compare. It might even run faster because it's missing parts of the game. Only once we've got Vulkan finished will we be able to do a fair comparison. And I'll just slip this in there, because people will ask. I'm told, and again, this is not my area, that there is an issue with Vulkan at the moment with Easy Anti-Cheat, which I believe Epic are looking into. And there are SDKs being released in the coming months, and when they are released, we'll be integrating them to try and resolve that issue. But again, that's outside my sphere of knowledge, I'm just dumping information. I knew there would be Linux questions.
