Would it be possible to have a show that is a dramatic reading of the various serialized fiction stories posted on the website?
TL;DRThey generally avoid making content the community already does well, such as dramatic readings, though they don't rule out an audio drama someday and one speaker may do an original audio piece.
There's a bunch of people out there that do that kind of stuff already, isn't there?
Yeah, there is. We do have a great community that already goes forward and will read some of the short stories and the serialized fiction pieces we have and put them up online. I know there's a handful that I've come across that have just been sent to the lore team. When I first started years and years ago, I think someone had basically made an audiobook, I think it was of Cassandra's Tears. So I'd already read it before joining the company, but within the first few months of me being here, I was listening to that audiobook too, just to kind of get my head into the headspace. So I found that very, very helpful.
Yeah, people are also doing translations of them. I just actually got a message on Spectrum about one by Astro Sam, I think, who did a German reading of Cassandra's Tears. And Star Citizen News Radio back in the day, I know, had done Lost Generation and a couple of other ones. So yeah, the community's been great about not only doing dramatic readings of it in English, but doing it in a variety of languages so people can appreciate it around the world, which is great.
It's worth noting, when they asked if we can do a show, this was actually directed to me, and I didn't realize until halfway through. We generally try to avoid making content that steps on the content that our community is already making. Over the years, we've thought about doing just this, or series that do recaps of all the lore like AstroPub does already. And oftentimes the community is out there putting in tremendous time, tremendous resources, tremendous effort into doing these things. And many of them are downright professional quality already. You should absolutely not be dismissing them just because they're fan-created. It just raises the question: why should we spend our time and our money to take a thing away from these community members to give to these community members when it's already being done? So it's not to say that we won't ever do something. It's not to say that there won't ever be an audio drama or something like that. I'm not going to sit here and just take that off the table right now. But oftentimes, one of the questions that we ask ourselves before we do anything is: is it something the community is already doing? And is the community already doing it, quite frankly, better than we have the time or resources or money to put towards? And when the answer is yes, we usually back off of that stuff and leave it to the purview of the community. It's a great way to showcase the symbiotic nature of the community and the developers throughout Star Citizen.
Let me just shout out Meijer, too, who on YouTube has read Dying Star and One Good Deed. A great Star Citizen streamer just in general, but if you're into the lore also, he's got those up on his YouTube page, so go check him out. Yeah, it's always wonderful to see stuff like that come through, to see people responding to the material and wanting to share it in another way, because maybe English isn't a first language, or some people just don't like to read, or it's just better to have it in an audio format. So we do really appreciate whenever the community steps in and is able to provide the content in a different context for us. So thanks.
Yeah, at some point, I'll do some kind of cheesy audio thing. But it'll probably be an original thing.
