VFX are traditionally downstream of a lot of things. Would you consider VFX a downstream team in a lot of aspects?

I don't like that term, by the way. I'm not a fan, even though I use it myself. I prefer support team. Downstream makes sense in as much as we typically can't do our work until the process has cascaded down. So that's where downstream comes from. But for me, downstream conjures images of, I don't know, the muddy bog at the end of the pretty stream, with a discarded shopping trolley. So I don't like to think of myself as... But yes, we are. Along with audio, the lovely audio.
