Will the procedural tech ever be used for things other than planets?asked by Sloan Warrior
TL;DRProcedural tech will be used for spherical planetoids such as moons or large asteroids, not small jagged asteroids; landing and mining on procedural planets are the first uses, landing probably first.
Well, the procedural tech's definitely going to be used for what we would call planetoids. So basically a planetoid is anything that has enough mass that it will end up being spherical. We're not going to use the specific procedural tech we have right now to do small, jaggy-shaped asteroids, because it's not really built or designed for that. But for instance, we would probably have what you would consider a moon or a very large asteroid that could be particularly spherical [and] use this. So one of the first things... when we have the procedural planets, there's two things we're really going to use them for. One is the landing area. And the second is that's going to be our first iteration of mining and mineral collection. So these are fairly large and procedural. So one of the things we can do is you can fly around and we can sort of... So when we get the procedural planet stuff in, which is not too far away, the things that we'll have are the landing and the mining. We'll probably do the landing first, and the mining will come in right after it. But we're pretty focused on gameplay that will let you do some other things besides just combat. So doing cargo runs, doing some mining, as well as doing some combat, and creating a very basic economic system that's going on, and we build that from there.
