Does the audio team know of any tech that could give the non-bespoke characters at admin desks and shops more variation in their voices without having different actors for each one?
Graham Philipson · Lead Audio Programmer

No. Well, right now the answer is no. We can apply pitching effects and filtering and things like that, and it always just sounds unnatural. The quality of Star Citizen that we're aiming for is we want it to sound real, so we don't want to make anything that we have sound any worse than it already does. And that's a terrible statement, isn't it? We don't want to degrade the audio at all, is what I should have said. But we are always keeping on top of developments in machine learning and AI, and as soon as we feel like it's a good time for us to start to investigate that, we certainly will, because we know that we've already got the DNA tech that allows us to have a huge variety of different faces, and we need to match that in audio somehow, but the tech just isn't quite there yet. Google are probably the only company in the world that has enough data to actually synthesize any voices in a realistic way. But we will keep an eye on it, and we will consider it if at some point it becomes feasible for us.
