Will the Defender be shredded to pieces by ballistic weapons? With a weak hull and a strong shield, is the answer to the Defender just to equip a bunch of ballistic weapons and take them out of the skies?

It'll possibly give you a bit of an advantage, but it's not going to completely tear through the shields and straight through the ship, and the Tevarin shields will help with that.
