Integrated voice chat: have there been any thoughts about that? I know a lot of people have seen a tech demo where there's positional audio, where you hear people farther away when they get farther away.
TL;DRPositional 3D voice chat is considered a must, and they've decided to build their own voice-over-IP system instead of using the engine's, but it's not a high priority yet and depends on a better party system.
Oh, sure. And I totally write that off like it's an easy thing. A lot of the voice chat stuff does that already. TeamSpeak is a great example, actually. In TeamSpeak, you can set any of the users to be in a different 3D sort of area. So if I'm playing with you, I have you behind, or over the right hand, or wherever. For us to know where the other players are that are speaking is super easy. We know that pretty much all the time, and within your vicinity we know it even more accurately. So absolutely we can do this. CryEngine already has a voice over IP system within it. The quality is not really where anybody's happy with it right now, and actually the bandwidth is pretty high. So we had talked to a couple of vendors that have different tech for this kind of stuff, and really in the end, we've just kind of decided that we'll just do our own. It makes a lot of sense to just do our own. Now, will it support the 3D positional audio? That's going to be a must. So it's definitely going to have to. If you're piloting a ship, and again, the Connie is a good example, you've got two co-pilots, and this guy says something, it has to come out of the right ear. It's going to sound absolutely ridiculous if it's just a disembodied sort of voice. Where things get even crazier is some of the ideas that have been floated around about runtime facial stuff, where the guy is talking and you look over and his guy's lips are flapping sort of thing.
Yeah, your webcam is recording your face as you move your mouth.
Exactly. There's little bits and pieces of R&D on this, and it might surprise you to know that a lot of our facial animators will just capture their own faces a lot of the time when they're testing stuff, just with their webcams. Actually, in the Bishop tech demo, there's a big range of motion that he does. That was all captured by the facial animator from his webcam. So all that tech exists. It's just, what's the priority of it? Not that high right now. We know we can do it. It's going to benefit the players more when there's a better party system, when that's a little more clear. It's a bit cart before the horse right now. So do we know how we'll do it? Yeah, we have a pretty good idea.
