The new latitude, longitude and altitude readout in the map is amazing. However, altitude is given as a distance from the center of the planet, latitudes are inverted with the North Pole at the bottom, and the compass points towards a point at the equator, not to either pole. Is this an intentional choice to confuse us, or is the North Pole merely on a temporary summer vacation?

Yeah, so we do have a new design for this stuff, and it's been simmering in the background, but it's not been the top priority thing when we're looking at bringing all these new cool features. Obviously we now do have the compass strip on the HUD and everything. There's still tuning to do, and yes, all of those things are the goal. That's the end goal. Decisions have been made on how this should be implemented, but they have not been [implemented yet].
