Like, you are the defeater of this dragon here, but could you grab these five apples for me, please? [Missions that don't fit the world or the player's standing]asked by Schism
TL;DRChris Roberts says most missions should make sense in the world because all goods are produced within the simulated economy, so shortages can occur; he hopes this feels more real.
Well, yeah, it's kind of hard to say, but I think most of the missions you can do will make sense in terms of the world. So if you're talking about a fantasy MMO, one of the problems is you go out and you basically start killing orcs and goblins because they drop gold or they drop magic weapons. But there's no ecosystem of those orcs and goblins manufacturing those weapons or mining the gold. Whereas the difference in the Star Citizen universe is anything that people have, the ships they have, the weapons they have, will all have to be created inside the system. So when your ship gets destroyed or you use missiles in that star system, you'll have to go and buy them again from a factory that manufactures them, that has goods. And if there's way too much combat happening in that star system, you may actually go to the store and they're out of missiles or they're out of ships or whatever, and you'll have to go somewhere else. You'll have to wait for them to show up later on. And so it's slightly different: everything that you can buy or sell, or things that happen, are generated inside the economic system. And I'm hoping that will make the universe feel a bit more real and tangible and make more sense. So we'll see. But that's the concept.
