You mentioned that you started on characters and you really didn't like characters. Was that because you weren't good at characters, or because they just didn't interest you, or were you not good because they didn't interest you?

TL;DRHe didn't like characters, having always been an environment person, and was put on one by his first employer, producing a lifeless model, so he realised it wasn't for him.

It's all of those things. Way back then, when I was first looking for a job, all the junior positions were, you must have one year's experience. But the problem is, how do you get a year's experience without getting hired? Anyway, I did unpaid work experience in this animated film studio, and it was two weeks. And they were like, there's no job. I was like, fine. All I need is your name on my CV so I could say I've been here, so I now have some experience. Anyway, at the end of the two weeks, they created a job for me, which was then my first job. So that was great. But when I was on work experience, I was baking animation, and then I did a bit of prop modeling and texturing. And they really needed a character artist for their next film. So they were like, right, John, here you go. And I tried it. But I just felt like, well, characters never interested me. So I thought, well, I've got to keep this job now, so I'll just do what you say. But I've always been an environment person, through my childhood and stuff, it was always about the world I was in rather than being a player or changing what my player looks like. So when I actually started this character, yeah, I modeled it. But you could tell that I just didn't have an understanding of how to make a character look good. So yes, it had eyes and a mouth and a nose and arms and stuff, but that was it. There was no life in it. So in a way, it was kind of a blessing in disguise that I tried it. And in that, what, month, two months, I was kind of like, yeah, this isn't for me. And we weren't using ZBrush at the time for it. So it was very much modeling it in Lightwave.

I know, I know. So really pushing those verts around. Yeah, it just wasn't for me.
