How did it go on set [at the first full performance capture shoot]?

Daniel CraigAnimator, motion capture

It was a bit chaotic. It was a long, really long week, but we came out in the end. We introduced a lot of things we never had in the pipeline before, so it was a lot of challenges. We had to sync everything up with time code. We had to bring the headcams into the system. But we got it all figured out in the end, and we got some good stuff. We got all the actors together, and I've been going through the data last week, and it's looking very good and nice and clean.

So I noticed all the actors had these little marks on their faces. What was the purpose of that?

Daniel CraigAnimator, motion capture

Well, in order for the software to properly pick up the actors' faces, you have to mark them up. You have to put small dots and small lines around their mouths to better track their muscle movement, basically.

What do you have on your head?

Daniel CraigAnimator and motion capture

So this is one of our headcams we do facial mocap with. And we just got it in, so we're kind of playing around with it.

What does facial mocap mean?

Daniel CraigAnimator and motion capture

We record the actor's face during his performance, and we give that data to another company, and then they help us with the facial acting in cinematics, for example.

So when we're doing our cinematics, in essence, we can block out a scene in real life, and then we're also capturing the eye lines and everything else in real time at the same time as capturing the motion.

Daniel CraigAnimator and motion capture

Yeah. I mean, that's why we get the good actors, right? So we can get the facial animation, too.

How did you get into the game industry?

Daniel CraigAnimator and motion capture

Well, because I speak German. I talked it over with my special lady friend and made sure we could handle it, because I was making pretty good money where I was at, but it was not industry related whatsoever. So I was trying to get into the industry and this QA position popped up.

Oh, you came through QA.

Daniel CraigAnimator and motion capture

Yeah, and because of my German language skills, that's what kind of got me in. And then I worked my way up from there. But yeah, it was like a 60% or something like that decrease in pay.

What are you going to be doing for us? You're going to be operating the mocap studio?

Daniel CraigAnimator and motion capture

Pretty much. It's one of the things. Handling a lot of the mocap studio, setting it up, running the stuff, recording, handling the shots, dealing with actors, just working with Brian a lot.
