Will we need to memorize ship layouts, or will we have the ability to target subsystems as well as our point of impact directly? Or will that require more advanced scanners or dedicated scout ships like the Terrapin or Hornet Tracker to allow sharing this information across a wing of ships?
TL;DRSubcomponent targeting is coming, but knowing where ship components and weak points are, such as uneven hull thickness, remains the better skill, and learning your own ship's weak spots gives pilots an advantage.
Well, we're going to have subcomponent targeting. It kind of exists in some form in the game, but it's not really... I think Yogi showed it even at CitizenCon. Yeah, actually, for the turrets; obviously, it will also be used for stuff like trying to hit the power plant or trying to hit any other internal component. At the same time, yes, if you know where each ship's components are, you already know where to shoot. Obviously, the targeting helps you, but anything you bother to learn or any experience you have is always going to be superior, I think. Especially when it comes back to, you mentioned sabotage. In that case, your use of scanners is a bit more limited. And knowing exactly where you need to go, how to deal the most damage, it's always a good skill to have.
We even had that already in our demo, right? So we had a faked penetration there. And because we knew where we needed to shoot, we could potentially target the power plant.
Yeah, and ships have weak points, not necessarily made on purpose, but simply because of the way they're built. The hull is not the same thickness in all places. The ship components are not distributed evenly. So knowing if your weapon can make it through the hull and the shields in that particular part of the ship, it's easier to hit the components. I think that's always something good to practice and learn.
It's going to be interesting to see how that affects pilots and the way they fly too, knowing where your weak spots are and learning to not expose them during combat.
And actually that is what we are all looking forward to, right? So we really want this, that maneuvering and knowing your ship well gives you an advantage over if you don't care about your ship.
