What considerations do you make for a PU that will eventually have more than 50 players?
TL;DRThey try to plan locations for the long term, with spaceports with many hangar slots, expandable cities and easily scalable habitation, but Johansson doesn't know how many players will end up on a server.
Well, we try to plan and build our locations for the long term, right? Even 50 players is a lot more than we had when we released the first of our locations, so that's quite an increase. Just looking at our spaceports, some spaceports have slots for up to 50 hangars, and 50 hangars can handle a lot of simultaneous traffic going in and out. Our cities are expandable. Looking at the future, for example with Area 18, we have all the alleyways in the city. They're basically modular caps, little L-shaped alleyways. They don't really do much right now, but we can expand on them in the future and add alleyway networks. Habitation is another thing that's very easily scalable. Looking at Area 18 again, there are so many towers and skyscrapers around, so it's very easy to fit the amount of player accommodation that is required. So we do try to plan for the long term. How many people are going to end up on a server in real time in the future? I don't know.
