I'd recommend just turning your engines off. I would always recommend that anyway. If you're prepared to pay the price for wear and degradation on your items, turning your engines off will settle you nicely, but it leaves all your shields. If you're halfway to the back of your Freelancer and someone starts shooting at you, you've got time to get back to your seat and do stuff.
