We see ships take damage all the time; in the most recent ATV, Petro Salerno was showing the damage states of the Nox. What, if anything, have we done for armor in that regard? Are you going to be able to see damaged armor?
TL;DRVisible armor damage has been discussed but not committed, since characters use an efficient shader and extra damage UVs would sharply raise vertex counts, so it hinges on performance cost.
It's been talked about, because we have the shaders for the ships, but the characters have their own shader that makes them very efficient across the board, because it's like an MMO, lots of characters. You want to make the render passes as efficient as possible. So it's been talked about, but I think they're probably waiting on what the cost would be.
I think it might have to be different than ships because, like Gaige just said, we have a very specific shader and a very specific tech setup that makes the characters.
It's possible, but you have to think. I'm just going to dive into ships real quick. The way they do that is they have another set of UVs that allow the burning system to happen, but that also duplicates the vert count of that object. So we're already doing all this stuff for characters. Let's say we make a third UV set, because the second UV set is already made for decals, stickers, things like that. Let's say we make a third one for a burn pass, like burning away, then you're tripling the vert count of a character. So it just adds up super quick.
It's not enough that you can do a thing. It's should you do a thing.
Do players want FPS or do they want to be able to burn away their stuff immediately? So we've got to figure it out.
Do you want five characters on screen or do you want 30 characters on screen? Because games are just all give and take, right? What's the most bang for your buck?
And the craziest part is that you have all this ship efficiency going on and then you have character efficiency, and then, wait, let's get both in there at one time. We've got 30 people on 10 ships to make it happen. So you've got to make things as clean as possible.
