With the Faceware technology, will it also work for players who wear glasses?
TL;DRFaceware tracking works with glasses, beards and small children, though imperfectly, for example with thick dark glasses or hidden lips; it can't work with sunglasses, and facial hair is slowing the gene-splicing customization.
Oh, absolutely. We have pictures of it, and thanks, Josh helped me a lot on these Faceware marketing images. So I had gone and recruited a couple guys, and I'm like, I need somebody with glasses. I need somebody that's got long hair. I need somebody that's got a beard. So yes, it absolutely works with glasses. Now, it's not perfect. I have seen it go wrong. And was it your glasses?
It's actually my glasses, they're the thicker black ones.
And it's because you have light eyebrow hair and dark glasses, so there have been times where it picks up the top of this. So we've talked to Faceware about this, and a lot of that is on their tracking side. But yes, it works with glasses, works with beards.
Mark McCall was doing it, Mark wears glasses.
Probably not sunglasses.
No, it can't work, it just won't pick up your eyeballs. That's the whole thing. But beards like Jared's are a little bit trickier too, because what it can't see is the lips. And if it can't see the lips, that's when it loses a face. And so people are aware too, when you do a performance capture with an actor, and this is generally where this tech comes from, you get them to shave if you can. I mean, there was a neat thing with Mark Hamill where we couldn't get him to shave when we were doing that thing just because of some other movie. So some people can't, but we have to adjust that accordingly. But yes, it works with beards, glasses. It's going to sound weird the way I say this, but it works with smaller children as well. My daughter is six years old. Put her in front of that, it picked her up, no problem. I was actually pretty impressed with that working so well. And it was fun for her to pull faces.
So do we need to get beard rigging in so we can get beard tech?
Yes, and actually, that's one of the things that's really slowing us down on the gene splicing thing, is facial hair, big time. Because we have to adjust the skin weight at runtime, and that's just something that we've never really had to do before, and it's not easy. If you know how to reapply dual quaternion skinning in real time, then we'd be good.
