Ostensibly this is Drake's version of an exploration ship, but when I see the remote turret, the forward-facing hardpoints and the ordnance, it seems like it's a bit loaded for bear. Is this accurate?

It's a pretty capable fighter, do you think? It's a very Drake thing. Ostensibly, they're a nice public company that's doing good things. But yeah, it's fully loaded. It can handle itself. Like the Cutlass, it was a militia patrol ship in the lore, but it gets used for more nefarious purposes. Same for the Caterpillar: it's a cargo ship, it's got a lot of guns and turrets on it, and I'm not sure the cargo it carries all the time is always what it's supposed to be carrying, but that seems to be what Drake does.
