Will Weissbaum · Lead WriterMan, I would modify it. Basically, I would acknowledge that these are claimed planets that we don't have a right to, but I would probably push for opening contact with these species.
Jared Huckaby · Host, CommunityBut the bill up for vote is just to abolish it, not to amend it. Do you keep it or do you abolish it?
Will Weissbaum · Lead WriterNo, I would keep it until I can introduce a new law.
Jared Huckaby · Host, CommunityAdam?
Adam Wieser · WriterI would keep it, personally, yeah. But I would point out the Fair Chance Act doesn't just apply to developing species. It can also affect mining rights to certain areas and stuff like that. If a species is developing, they don't want people up in the asteroid belt or going down to the planet to pull out these valuable resources and potentially mess with any of the species there. There's even one candidate in the current final five of the Imperator election, Paul LaSalle, one of whose core campaign promises is to basically revisit the Fair Chance Act as a way to open it up for miners to be able to maybe use new technologies or access certain areas of the empire that were previously off limits. So there is a pro-business stance too. It's like, maybe it needs to be refined, because we can do this in a better way that can benefit both humanity and the UEE and the economy without necessarily affecting the development of these species. So there's lots of different areas that it does split up into.
