Does the system allow you to paint a planet and automatically use the correct material based on the planet's temperature, size, atmosphere and so on, or do you have to go in and set all of those things individually each time?
TL;DRYes, a climate square lets them paint biomes by humidity and temperature so new data is redistributed logically, meaning they wouldn't need to repaint biomes each time, with a slight workflow adjustment.
So, it is something that we have been discussing in the team as well, and yes, there is an option. If you take a look at this square over here, I can take, for example, the Obsidian Dark biome and paint it down, and you can see that it automatically gets applied here. So what we could do, because each and every corner of this texture resembles specific humidity and temperature situations: the top right is cold and dry, the bottom right is hot and dry... warm, dry, warm, wet, and then cold, wet. So I could basically go in and paint something in that would logically resemble some climate, for example, if it was Earth. Where it's cold and dry, I could put my Arctic areas and really paint this square out completely unrelated to any planet or anything really. And then we could throw any data at it and it would redistribute this data logically. So the answer would be we don't have to go in and adjust the painting all the time and repaint our biomes. Because you can see even only this local height map here already adjusts to the new data. And the same thing is happening globally. It's the very same logic being applied there. So just by adjusting our workflow slightly, we could totally do that.
