One thing that would liven up the game would be the ability to open a communication channel with other ships, even enemy ships, just like you can in Wing Commander. Pirates could use it to negotiate terms with passing vessels, nearby players to form temporary alliances, or simply to warn a passerby. Will it be possible to send a request to hail other ships in Star Citizen via voice over IP communication?asked by Hassan Pfeffer
TL;DRShort-range ship-to-ship communication is planned, ideally via voice over IP using middleware, but moderation is a concern and being there on day one can't be promised.
Well, no, I think you'll definitely be able to. And we're definitely going to have a communication system that's in sort of short range in space, similar to Wing Commander and Privateer, where you can talk to people. So we would like to get it working via IP. So we'll see. There are some moderation issues in that in a multiplayer environment. But sometimes you can get around it by just saying, as long as I use this, I acknowledge that Cloud Imperium has no control over the language that people use, and you can turn people off. So we'd definitely like to get that working, because we recognize that people would do it outside the system anyway. So it would really just be a matter of time and whether that would sort of...
How soon it comes into play?
Yeah, I mean, I think that's definitely in our game no matter what at some point. Is it day one? I don't know. Certainly you'll be able to send messages and chat and do everything else. And I would like to have it in there. And we're looking at some open source or some middleware solutions so it's pretty easy for us to integrate. So that's definitely on our list. And it will be there day one, can't 100% promise, but we'll see. I think it's kind of important. I think it adds to the immersion. It's kind of cool.
