Is there something in particular that could spike that [build time] one way or the other?
TL;DRBuild time varies with system load, network congestion during uploads, and the many parallel steps involved; the average is three to four hours, with data and upload taking longer than client compiles.
Well, there's always a lot of load on the system, so that could always cause times to fluctuate quite a bit. There's a lot of uploading that takes place during that, so sometimes the network can be bogged down.
Yeah, I was about to add to that. It's not just compilation time. There's a lot of fan out and fan in. There's a lot of steps. We go do a lot of things in parallel, and then we collect them back in. And these are systems that sometimes are under development themselves. Sometimes we make changes that make things take longer or take shorter. But yeah, if we're talking in general, like Miles said, between three to four hours is our average.
And you're right, Ahmed, in that when a build is finished cooking, it's not ready to be distributed. It's because it needs to be uploaded so that it can be distributed. And that step is fairly long as well. That's why the total time is three or four hours.
The client compiles themselves are relatively quick. The data is typically what takes the longest. And that can go for an hour or two for sure.
