Asking as a junior project manager: how granular do you define tasks, and how do you estimate how long each will take?
Annie · Producer

That's experience, man. It's really hard. The amount of time a task will take is just when you've been on a project for a while and you know your people and you know how fast they work.

Nicolas Painchaud · Assistant Art Director, Turbulent Games

Depends on how many you have on the team.

Annie · Producer

It's not one size fits all. Not at all. And granular, again, it depends on your team. My art team is very autonomous, and I don't need to go into too much detail to keep them focused. But other teams will function in a way where they'll hammer out 10 tasks a week. So you need to be more granular with them. But it really depends on the discipline you're managing. Not knowing which project you're managing, it's hard to answer, but it really depends on your team. Get to know your team and their strong points and their weaknesses, and that's really what helps.
