What do you work on for Star Citizen? What does an engine programmer do?
TL;DRWill works on the planet tech team on procedural tools like planets and rivers, building enormous planets at runtime from under 10 megs of data, while engine programmers generally do core low-level tech.
Engine programmer could be anyone really, working on the engine, but more specifically I work on the planet tech team. There's four of us, five depending on who you count, and we work on all of the procedural tools like the rivers, like the planets, like some of the graphicsy stuff, because we're kind of a graphics team and yet kind of not. But generically, I'd say an engine programmer is just going to be working on core tech and low-level engine stuff. Specifically, I work on the procedural, the building big things from small amounts of data very, very quickly sort of side of things.
Such as?
Such as the planets, such as the rivers, that's what we do. We have these enormous giant-scale planets that we build from less than 10 megs of data, and we do it at runtime as you fly around them. That's what my team manage and work on and improve and develop new features for.
